Anomaly cancellation in M - theory

چکیده
We show the complete cancellation of gauge and gravitational anomalies in the Mtheory of Horava and Witten using their boundary contribution, and a term coming from the existence of two and five-branes. A factor of three discrepancy noted in an earlier work is resolved. We end with a comment on flux quantization. e-mail: [email protected] In the M-theory of Horava and Witten [1] several consistency checks associated with anomaly cancellation were verified. However one test which involved a numerical coefficient of a purely gravitational anomaly was not carried out. In an earlier paper by the author [2] the coefficient of a certain M-theory Green-Schwarz term [3] was determined, but there appeared to be a factor of three discrepancy with the expression (3.12) of [1]. In this short note we review the anomaly cancellation argument and find that the M-theory topological terms do indeed cancel both gauge and gravitational anomalies. Finally we comment on flux quantization in M-theory in the light of a recent paper by E. Witten[4]. We work with the “downstairs” version of the theory, i.e. on an 11-D manifold M = M10 × S/Z2. The topological term in the low energy effective action of M-theory is

Flux corrections to anomaly cancellation in M-theory on a manifold with boundary
We show how the coupling of gravitinos and gauginos to fluxes modifies anomaly cancellation in M-theory on a manifold with boundary. Anomaly cancellation continues to hold, after a shift of the definition of the gauge currents by a local gauge invariant expression in the curvatures and E 8 fieldstrengths. We compute the first nontrivial correction of
متن کاملAnomaly cancellation in M–theory on orbifolds
We present calculation of the anomaly cancellation in M–theory on orbifolds S/ZZ2 and T /ZZ2 in the upstairs approach. The main requirement that allows one to uniquely define solutions to the modified Bianchi identities in this case is that the field strength G be globally defined on S1 or T 5 and properly transforming under ZZ2. We solve for general G that satisfies these requirements and expl...
متن کاملAnomaly cancellation and smooth non-Kähler solutions in heterotic string theory
We show that six-dimensional backgrounds that are T 2 bundle over a Calabi–Yau two-fold base are consistent smooth solutions of heterotic flux compactifications. We emphasize the importance of the anomaly cancellation condition which can only be satisfied if the base is K3 while a T 4 base is excluded. The conditions imposed by anomaly cancellation for the T 2 bundle structure, the dilaton fiel...
متن کاملNon-abelian Tensor-multiplet Anomalies
We use the anomaly cancellation of the M-theory fivebrane to derive the R-symmetry anomalies of the AN (0, 2) tensor-multiplet theories. This result leads to a simple derivation of black hole entropy in d = 4,N = 2 compactifications of M -theory. We also show how the formalism of normal bundle anomaly cancellation clarifies the Kaluza-Klein origin of Chern-Simons terms in gauged supergravity th...
متن کاملHeterotic Anomaly Cancellation in Five Dimensions
We study the constraints on five–dimensional N = 1 heterotic M–theory imposed by a consistent anomaly–free coupling of bulk and boundary theory. This requires analyzing the cancellation of triangle gauge anomalies on the four–dimensional orbifold planes due to anomaly inflow from the bulk. We find that the semi–simple part of the orbifold gauge groups and certain U(1) symmetries have to be free...
